The Magic of Light
Behind the Scenes: Location Pet Photography and the Magic of Light
There is something truly special about photographing dogs in their element. Out in the open, tails wagging, ears flying in the breeze... it is pure joy. Location sessions are one of my absolute favorite things to offer, and I want to pull back the curtain a little on how I make them work so beautifully.
Bringing the Light With Me
One of the biggest misconceptions about outdoor photography is that natural light handles everything for you. While the great outdoors gives us gorgeous settings, I always bring my Godox strobes along to every location session. Having a strobe means I am in control of the light, no matter what the environment throws at us, and with dogs, flexibility is everything!
Making Shade Work in Our Favor
A lot of my location sessions take place in local parks, and I absolutely love it when we find a spot with dappled shade and sunlight filtering through the trees. It creates a dreamy, painterly quality. By pairing that beautiful natural light with my strobe, I can fill in shadows, make your pup's eyes sparkle, and create a polished, professional look that would be impossible to achieve with ambient light alone. The combination is honestly one of my favorite things to work with.
Capturing That Full-Speed Run
For action shots, we move to open spaces with plenty of bright sunlight. This lets me use a fast shutter speed to freeze every paw mid-stride and capture that pure, exhilarating energy that makes dogs so wonderful. There is nothing better than a perfectly sharp photo of a dog running at full speed with a huge grin on their face!
For pups who like to explore a little too freely, I use a 30-foot lead so they can run, play, and feel completely free without any worry about them venturing too far. The lead gets removed seamlessly in editing, so your final gallery will show nothing but open, beautiful space and one very happy dog.
The Bottom Line
Every location session is thoughtfully planned to give your dog the best possible experience while delivering photos you will genuinely love for years to come. Great light, happy dogs, and a little bit of behind-the-scenes magic. That is what it is all about!
If you have been thinking about booking a location session, I would love to chat. Let's get your pup in front of the camera!
